Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a key Champions League match against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to secure a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to practice with the first team and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," said the player after his debut.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with great stamina, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a decision soon."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose Spain, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.

After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the pitch," he said following the success at Etihad Stadium.
