The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

A freshly coined acronym surfaced a few months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is unique to Gaza, per insights from doctors such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is unusual for medical staff to treat a child who has been bereaved of their whole family. However, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are still being committed. Officials rejects these claims, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is accused of. Yet as traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, it seems, is what unity manifests as.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what seems to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. A contest that initially championed togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
