California's Governor Confirms He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he will determine whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections conclude.
"Absolutely, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor commented when questioned about contemplating a White House bid post the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
Newsom's time in office as California's leader ends in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he noted that any choice is still years away.
"The future will decide," he said.
Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic
Newsom has stepped forward as a high-profile opponent of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and championing a proposition that would expand Democratic congressional seats in response to GOP gerrymandering. This move has invited attacks from adversaries.
Clash on Transportation
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend appearance on Fox News. Duffy announced a strategy to cut federal funds from the state and suggested revoking the power to issue CDLs.
"I intend to cut $160m from the state," he stated, in the wake of a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized trucker that led to loss of life and casualties.
The governor's team pointed out that the federal government had approved the worker's status on several occasions, which enabled him to receive a CDL under federal law.
The transportation secretary had earlier stated he was blocking additional funds from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," the governor's team said in a recent comment responding to Duffy's threats. "For now, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."
Polling Data and Political Future
A recently conducted study revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor should run for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has grown to an typical level of a third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an mean of over 40% to current figures.
In previous months, the governor remarked while visiting several key regions that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He noted his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.
"The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, amazing," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the voters."
