Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
